Research infrastructures

SyMMyS is hosting a broad range of state-of-the-art infrastructures needed for biomedical research. The infrastructures accessible via the Biocenter Finland, to which University of Turku (UTU) - Centre for Biotechnology (CBT) belongs, are complemented by state-of-the-art VTT facilities for immunotechnology as well as by the clinical research infrastructures as part of the large clinical cohort studies conducted within the Centre of Excellence. New metabolomics facility is currently being established at Steno Diabetes Centre, which is collaborating with CoE via new appointments of Matej Oresic and Tuulia Hyötyläinen.

EASY-nLC 1000 UPLC system with LTQ Orbitrap Velos with ETD, ESI-hybrid ion trap-orbitrap (2012), EASY-nLC 1000 UPLC system with Q Exactive (2012), EASY-nLC 1000 UPLC system with TSQ Vantage (2012), UltiMate 3000 HPLC system with QSTAR Elite, ESI-hybrid quadrupole-TOF Ultraflex II, MALDI-TOF/TOF, and various software solutions for identification and quantitation (label and label-free).

Genomics and genome wide high-throughput methods

Finnish Microarray and Sequencing Centre,  UTU (CBT)

HiSeq2000 and SOLiD 5500xl next-generation sequencing platforms, SX-8G IP-Star Automated System, Affymetrix GeneTitan, Affymetrix GeneChip, Agilent and Illumina Bead Array microarray systems, ABI 7900HT Fast Real-Time PCR System, ABI 3130xl Genetic Analyzer, RNAi/miRNA screening facility in LIAI (led by Anjana Rao).

Cell imaging and bioimaging

Turku Bioimaging

Leica STED (Stimulated Emission Depletion) range of instruments for confocal and widefield imaging including live cell imaging. In vivo imaging, including PET of animal and human.


VTT (Espoo, Turku)

Genetix Qarray2 and Genemachines Omnigrid100 microarray printers, highly sensitive four-color confocal laser scanner for fluorescent imaging of the well bottom and production of a quantitative readout of bound antibodies on the array.

Equipment needed for DNA/RNA-extraction, several PCR and gel electrophoresis machines, DGGE and DHPLC systems, BioNumerics-software, LightCycler 480 quantitative PCR systems, ABI PRISM 3100 automated capillary DNA cycle sequencer, Kodon-software, Olympus BX60 epifluorescent microscope
